Extraordinary Grace.

Project Overview.

How many future Nobel prize winners, vaccine developers, or cancer curers, have given up pursuing a career in STEM because the current system leaves them feeling like they don’t belong?

This is a question that SCIEX knew could wait no longer, so approached Lava to find an innovative way to engage the STEM community, with the aim of generating important conversation and uncovering much needed solutions.

Extraordinary Grace is the culmination of an industry-first, insight-led participation campaign that shone a powerful light on the issues of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the scientific community.

With a keynote speech script quite literally built by the words, advice and mentorship of over 1200 scientists around the world, the talented team at Lava and our sister production team Pebble Studios set out to create a world first thought leadership platform and event hosted by a meta-human.

Developing a Thought Leadership Platform.

The first stage of the project was to gain as many viewpoints (or mentors) as possible. This was achieved by developing an immersive survey experience in which mentors were asked to provide Grace with advice on her STEM journey, based on their own experiences.

Designing the Building Blocks.

As the project was designed to encourage currently under-represented communities into STEM, we wanted to build a futuristic design system that would stand the test of time.

Brand Components.

When designing the colour pallet for the project we needed it to still feel part of the broader SCIEX brand while giving off a fresh, futuristic design system that would appeal to a new generation.

Building a Community Component.

The final question of the survey asks mentors to leave a recorded or written message for Grace to encourage her on her journey. This was then added to the database and made available in the explorer section of the website.

Below you can see the development UI work and final high-fidelity frames we designed to help users navigate the universe of insights that we were gathering.

Creating a World First Meta Human Influencer.

Capturing data and insights is one thing, but bringing it to life in a way that has never been seen or done before is another.

In the summer of 2022, we took all the learnings and insights that we collected from Grace’s mentors and let her tell her own story in a virtual keynote speech streamed globally.
