When COVID hit and lockdowns were announced, PepsiCo’s professional employees had to adjust to permanently working from home where their personal & professional lives blended (and sometimes clashed). With the emotional drain of being confined to one space and the uncertainty of the future, PepsiCo knew it needed to up their game when it came to internal communications to reach people with extra support. They approached Lava to help elevate the way they communicated in this now fully digital, remote working world.

With the amount of day-to-day communications that PepsiCo employees receive on a daily basis, bland & corporate simply wouldn’t cut it.
With the work environment turning on its head, we felt ‘work lingo’ needed to follow suit. Typically, we hear many idioms and terminologies at the office such as ‘flesh it out’, ‘it’s got legs’ and ‘mock it up’.
With PepsiCo’s Smiles2Go series, we invented a witty and relatable messaging and design system that humanised their approach to internal communications.

By combining a fun but empathetic TOV with fun, eye-catching, saturated 2D cartoons, we were able to help PepsiCo demonstrated that they understood the challenges employees faced while at the same time providing them with fun and eye-catching strategic support and guidelines to help them navigate the changes in work-life balance.
An integrated approach.
After developing our new design system, we provided the PepsiCo local markets with a suite of digital assets that could live on local intranets, emails, presentations and onboarding documentation.
